1) Next SUG-TX Meeting - September 27th

 

The Sybase Users’ Group of Texas did not meet in August due to the TechWave 2005 Conference in Las Vegas being held during the regularly scheduled meeting time.  SUG-TX will hold their next meeting on Tuesday, September 27th.  Sybase did a preview launch of ASE 15 at TechWave and will hold the official launch on September 15th.  Come to the SUG-TX meeting for our version of an ASE 15 launch and a wrap up of the TechWave 2005 Conference.  SUG-TX board members Don Clayton, Kathy Ridley, Cindy Bean, and Cynthia Gill attended TechWave and will review the information presented Las Vegas.  Come hear about the exciting news that Sybase shared with attendees.   

 

This meeting will be held in a special location for September.  Stayed tuned for more details!

 

 

2) New Sybase Job Opportunities!

 

Sybase is back! There have been a lot of new Sybase-related job opportunities emerging lately.  Soon the users' group will begin posting these opportunities online.  Until the jobs are posted, if you are either looking for a new challenge or looking for a seasoned Sybase professional, contact Don Clayton at president@sugtx.org or one of your user group officers, and we'll get you in touch with the right people.  We will also be announcing the opportunities we are aware of at all meetings going forward, so be sure to attend the September meeting if you're looking for a change.

 

 

3) Sybase Signs Agreement To Acquire Extended Systems To Expand Information Mobility Capabilities

 

DUBLIN, Calif. — July 29, 2005 —Sybase, Inc. (NYSE: SY), a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure and mobile software, today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Extended Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:XTND), a leading provider of mobile software solutions, in a cash merger with a total diluted equity value of approximately $71.3 million, or $4.460847 per share. The transaction, which is subject to regulatory approval, approval by Extended Systems’ stockholders, and other specified closing conditions is expected to close in the fourth quarter of calendar 2005. Following the closing of the proposed acquisition, Sybase intends to integrate Extended Systems into Sybase’s iAnywhere Solutions subsidiary.

 

Founded in 1984, Extended Systems brings to Sybase its patented mobile technology, approximately 2,500 global enterprise customers, and a very strong presence in Europe. Extended Systems is headquartered in Boise, Idaho, with 180 employees in North America and Europe.

 

“The acquisition of Extended Systems is expected to enhance our portfolio of mobile middleware solutions and strengthen our geographic presence, particularly in Europe,” said Chairman, President, and CEO John Chen. “This acquisition will position Sybase with a powerful, end-to-end information mobility offering that, when combined with our industry leading mobile database and mobile device management products, will enable Sybase to deliver on the benefits of the Unwired Enterprise.”

4) iAnywhere Customer Wins Highlight Demand For SQL Anywhere On Linux

5)  Sybase Achieves Another First with IBM OpenPower Servers

 

Bundling of Sybase Database Software with IBM OpenPower Linux Servers Marks New Industry Direction for Enterprise Computing Partnerships

 

DUBLIN, Calif. August 1, 2005 – Sybase, Inc. (NYSE: SY), a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure and mobile software, today announced that it has broadened a long-standing relationship with IBM to help joint customers migrate to Linux® for improved data management and business analytics.

 

Under the terms of the agreement Sybase and IBM will bundle IBM® OpenPower™ hardware with Sybase® Adaptive Server® Enterprise (ASE) Express Edition for Linux – the first enterprise-class commercial database to enable users to develop and deploy projects on Linux for maximum performance and manageability, without cost and with reduced risk.

 

The new and unique offering marks the first time two partners have bundled enterprise hardware and software together for worldwide shipping.  As a result, users will now have access to a free, out-of-the-box database deployment for Linux.  Worldwide shipping of the bundled offering will begin in August 2005.  North America shipping commenced July 29, 2005.  In addition, free downloads of ASE Express Edition are currently available to existing OpenPower users via www.Sybase.com/linuxpromo.

6) Houston User Group for Sun (HUGS) Meeting
