1) Next SUG-TX Meeting – January 24, 2006

The Sybase Users’ Group of Texas will hold their next meeting on Tuesday, January 24, 2006.  Jeff Wayt of IOBar, Inc, will have a presentation on two subjects: 1) Date Intervals- Strategies for Recurring Events implemented in Powerbuilder, and 2) Email Empowering Your Powerbuilder Application.  Date Intervals are useful, coded expressions of calendar events that can be stored in a database and used in date math, similar to that seen in MS Outlook's Calendar.  The strategy is database and language neutral, although there will be samples of PowerBuilder PFC-based source code available. The Email topic will show how to implement the Code Exchange version of PBNI SMTP to make & send emails in a PowerBuilder application without using Outlook/MAPI.  A lively discussion of how to make management more robust will ensue.

The meetings are held at HAL-PC, 4543 Post Oak Place, Suite 200, Houston, TX 77027 (map), from 4:00pm to 6:30pm.  Members frequently continue discussions at Champps Sports Bar after the meeting while waiting for traffic to subside.

2) SUG-TX Launches ASE 15

SUG-TX invited Jeff Tallman, Sybase Evangelist, to Houston to help SUG-TX launch ASE 15.  The group met at Jillian’s on Tuesday, Nov 8th to learn about some of ASE 15’s innovative features including:

·   On-Disk Encryption – Encrypt data on disk (and into backups) without any application modifications.

·   Smart Partitions – Break down very large tables into several smaller tables, either by key, hash-code, range of values or round-robin.

·   New Query Processing Engine – Greatly enhance the performance of complex queries. When coupled with two other new features, Computed Columns and Function Indexes, some customers have seen reductions of up to 80% of reporting time on mission critical reports.

ASE 15 includes more features than Jeff had time to cover.  Check out more on ASE on http://www.sybase.com/ase.

Mobile database market faces evolving compute models, but a handful of best practices still hold true

By Geoff Koch of SD Times

December 15, 2005 — Always-on computing is set to arrive any time now, according to tech optimists shouting from the mountaintops. Word is that, because of expanding spheres of wireless broadband availability and more powerful mobile devices, the era of cubicle-only access to applications, even big enterprise databases, is poised to pass away for good.
