1) SUG-TX January 25th SUG-TX Meeting Highlights

The Sybase Users’ Group of Texas held their first meeting of 2005 on Tuesday, January 25th.   The first meeting of the year involves planning for the year ahead and electing officers.  The officers elected for 2005 are:

   President              Donald Clayton, Intertech Consulting
Vice President      Bernie Dy, MI Drilling
   Treasurer             Kathy Ridley, Adea Solutions
   Secretary             Cindy Bean, BMC Software

Don reviewed the topics and meetings held in 2004 and asked for suggestions for topics for 2005.  Many good ideas were mentioned and there will be some great topics this year.  Don's presentation is available at:  http://sugtx.org/MeetingResources/20050125/SugTXJanuary2005Meeting.pps

The major topic suggestions for 2005 are as follows:

   PowerBuilder .Net DataWindow Unleashed

   Sybase's Mobile and Wireless Solutions

Using EAServer 5.2 with Java and J2EE

PowerBuilder 11 - The latest .Net Language

   Sybase Enterprise Portal

Moving from ERWin or Rational Rose to PowerDesigner 11

Advanced Features of Sybase ASE 15

   The New Java DataWindow

   Sybase on Linux Strategies

The officers for 2005 will endeavor to put on the highest quality presentations available this year, with more of a solutions-based focus and hands on examples.  This will be an exciting year for Sybase, especially for the release of ASE 15.0 this year.  In the tools area, PowerBuilder becomes a full .Net language this year with support for the .Net System namespace, DataWindows in web forms, ASPX support for PowerBuilder applications, including the ability to inherit from C# and VB.Net objects and vice versa.  If you have any other suggestions for topics for 2005, the agenda is still being finalized and it is not too late to make some suggestions.

2) February 25th SUG-TX Meeting

The Sybase Users' Group of Texas will not hold a meeting in February, and the next meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 22nd.  To start the year off right, Bryan Roberts and Dave Fink will reprise and expand on a presentation delivered to the Houston .Net Users' Group (http://hdnug.org/hdnug/pastevents.aspx#Event36).  Since delivering this presentation in November, the .Net DataWindow 1.5 beta has been released, offering support for DataWindows in .Net web forms.  Also, Intertech Consulting has been tapped to be the first company in the U.S. to deliver .Net DataWindow training in Syberspace.  So be sure not to miss this exciting and informative presentation!

Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of the month, from 4:00pm - 6:30pm at HAL-PC; 4543 Post Oak Place, Suite 200.  Additional meeting details will be sent in the March newsletter.

4) Sybase Database Software Attains Coveted Security Certification

Dublin, CA – February 15, 2005 -- Sybase today announced that its enterprise class relational database Sybase ASE 12.5.2 has attained a security certification of level 4 (EAL4) from the International Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation, making it the most recent database offering in the industry to achieve this level of certification. This certification level, the highest achieved by general-purpose software, is evidence of Sybase ASE’s impressive security features such as SSL-protected communications and row-based access controls.

The Common Criteria Certification is required by the United States Government before any IT products can be considered for purchase by government offices, departments and other federally funded organizations. In addition, Common Criteria is an internationally recognized security evaluation required by numerous central governments worldwide for any of their departments interested in procuring commercially available products. Common Criteria certification also assures businesses of a standard measure of the security design of their computing products.

The National Information Assurance Partnership Common Criteria Evaluation verifies compliance with the Common Criteria certification standard and Validation Scheme (CCEVS) Validation Body -- which is a joint activity managed by both the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Security Agency (NSA). The EAL4 certificate, together with its associated validation report, confirms that the security functions of Sybase ASE 12.5.2 have been evaluated at an accredited laboratory for conformance to the Common Criteria.
