Mar)
The Sybase Users’ Group of Texas
will hold their next meeting on Tuesday, November 27, 2007. The meeting
will be a follow up to the August meeting Appeon vs PowerBuilder
Bake-off. At that time we reviewed the steps to take a PowerBuilder
application to the web using PowerBuilder 11’s new features, versus using the
Appeon 5.0 .NET Edition. This follow up presentation will be a “Deep Dive”
into the Appeon 5.0 for PowerBuilder .NET Edition.
In this follow up presentation, the
underlying mechanics of the Appeon 5.0 .NET Edition product will be presented.
N-tier Web applications can be generated from existing PowerBuilder
application code using only standard PowerBuilder client/server programming.
End-users are presented with the familiar rich user interface that keeps
them highly productive.
Appeon for PowerBuilder .NET
Edition automatically replicates the client/server user interface with HTML
running in standard Microsoft Web browsers. The application business logic
including DataWindows and Embedded SQL is deployed to a .NET-based back-end. The
back-end can be readily integrated with other .NET or Web Services-based Web
applications. The standard n-tier Web architecture of Appeon for PowerBuilder
offers a high degree of scalability, availability, reliability, flexibility and
security.
In a related announcement, the
Sybase PowerBuilder Foundation Class (PFC) now works with Appeon 5.x. The
older Appeon-Compliant Framework (ACF) will no longer be used. Appeon
engineers worked on the Sybase open source PFC 10.5 project and released a PFC
version that works with Appeon without modification. To download the PFC
10.5 from Sybase website, please access http://pfc.codexchange.sybase.com
and login. Select Documents & files from the left menu, expand the
Release node, click into PB 10.5 folder and then download “2007.11.07
release”.
The meetings are held at HAL-PC,

3) Sybase IQ Positioned in Leading Independent Research Firm’s
Visionaries Quadrant for Data Warehouse Database Management Systems Magic
Quadrant
DUBLIN,
CA — NOVEMBER 13, 2007 — Sybase,
Inc. (NYSE: SY), a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure and mobile
software, today announced that Sybase® IQ analytics server has been positioned
by Gartner, Inc. in the visionaries quadrant in the 2007 Data Warehouse DBMS
Magic Quadrant report authored by Donald Feinberg and Mark A. Beyer (October 10,
2007). The report evaluates vendors that supply database management system
software to power enterprise data warehousing.
“Our
customers tell us that Sybase IQ analytics server is the ideal solution for
analytics. Its innovative column-based architecture helps customers accelerate
the time to value for applications such as risk analysis and
analytics-as-a-service. We consider our position in the visionaries quadrant a
strong validation of the role this next-generation of data warehouse plays in
mission-critical analytics systems,” said Dr. Raj Nathan, Chief Marketing
Officer, Sybase.
Sybase
IQ is a highly optimized analytics server, able to handle the most challenging
data warehousing requirements with ease—improving query times by as much as 100
times. Organizations with very large data warehouses benefit from the
significant reduction in hardware and energy costs due to Sybase IQ’s
compression capability. In a recent independent benchmark on a world’s record
one petabyte of raw data, Sybase IQ compressed data 85 percent resulting in a
“green” data environment with 90 percent less CO2 emissions over the data
warehouse’s life time. http://www.sybase.com/detail?id=1054011
Designed
from the start as an analytics server, Sybase IQ produces its incredible results
because of a unique architecture combining a column-based data structure with
patented indexing and a scalable grid. Compatible with standard hardware
platforms and leading analytics applications, Sybase IQ offers extraordinarily
high performance at a lower cost than a traditional row-oriented database.
Sybase IQ also reduces storage and server requirements compared to traditional
database management systems. Sybase IQ has been tested on trillions of rows of
data and is the TPC-H price-performance record holder in the 1 terabyte and 300
gigabyte categories.
4) Sybase Refreshes PowerBuilder
(from SD Times)
November
15, 2007 — Sybase has updated its
PowerBuilder 11 RAD tool and the DataWindow .NET component with new features
designed to take advantage of the latest technologies in the Microsoft software
ecosystem.
PowerBuilder
11.1 now works with Windows Vista, and offers database driver enhancements,
including new driver support for the Informix 10 database platform. It also
offers incremental compile for .NET Framework applications.
DataWindow
.NET 2.5 offers an updated style for data source presentation and now allows
developers to use a Web service as the source for a DataWindow. The so-called
“TreeView” presentation style has been extended to include Web-based
applications as well as desktop ones, and the DataWindow Designer is now
available as a set of Visual Studio 2005 plug-ins, so developers have one less
reason to leave the IDE. The standalone DataWindow Designer remains part of the
package, which in this release adds support for Microsoft SQL Server 2005.
“These
enhancements represent another milestone in Sybase’s .NET Framework strategy,”
said product manager Sue Dunnell, “which is to provide developers with an array
of tools that solve the challenge of developing business-critical applications,”
while making best use of existing skill sets.
PowerBuilder
11.1 and DataWindows .NET 2.5 will both be available on Nov. 15, and are sold
separately. Updates to PowerBuilder begin at US$1,495 and new licenses are
$2,995; DataWindow .NET is available for $645.
