2) Next SUG-TX Meeting – September 26, 2006

The Sybase Users’ Group of Texas will hold their next meeting on Tuesday, September 26, 2006.  Christophe Dufourmantelle of Novalys will present on their tools, such as Visual Guard and Visual Expert.

Abstract:

* Managing PowerBuilder and Transact-SQL applications with Visual Expert 5.7

(Impact Analysis, Source Code Documentation, Code Review, code exploration...)

We all meet the same problems while working on large applications.  It is difficult to master the whole project, especially for the parts that were developed by other people.  The objective of this presentation is to in explain that good solutions exist, and demonstrate with case studies how to implement them.

Visual Expert 5.7 adds Transact-SQL support to the PowerBuilder and PL/SQL one.  It analyses both PowerBuilder and stored Procedure code at the same time.  As its previous versions, Visual Expert provides impact analysis, code exploration, code review and technical documentation.

The following are examples situations we will discuss using real case studies and code examples:
-  I want to modify the DB Schema and I need to understand the complete effect of this change over the PB components and Stored Procedures.
-  I want to modify a stored procedure: which other procedures and PB components may be affected?
-  I have just arrived in a new project, which is maintaining a large application. How can I discover and master this code quickly?
-  How can I clean up the code to make it easier to maintain?

Create and manage user profiles and permissions for PowerBuilder applications with Visual Guard 10.0

With Visual Guard, you can create and manage user profiles and permissions. You can implement security in any new or existing PowerBuilder or .NET Applications.

Below are two case studies that we will be discussing:

The application has many users, but they don't have the same permissions…
- How to Control access to each window of the application
- How to filter information according to the user profile
- How to hide items of a window (menu, field, control, tab, etc.)...

Building a security management system is complex and takes a long time
- How to give power users the possibility to manage permissions without involving the development team?
- How to manage a large number or users and profiles
- How to define date/time ranges for user profiles

This presentation will show you how to solve these problems.

Agenda:

  4:00pm - 4:15pm    Introduction, Welcome, Q&A

4:15pm - 5:45pm    Visual Expert and Visual Guard

                               Christophe Dufourmantelle, Novalys

  5:45pm - 6:00pm   Wrap Up

6:30pm -                Post meeting discussions at Champps Americana (at the Uptown location)

The meetings are held at HAL-PC, 4543 Post Oak Place, Suite 200, Houston, TX 77027 (map).  Members frequently continue discussions at Champps Sports Bar after the meeting while waiting for traffic to subside.
